Health Sensing System: what is new

The Series 12 introduces the all-new Health Sensing System, featuring larger, power-efficient green LEDs that measure heart rate every 5 seconds continuously throughout the day.

Continuous heart rate every 5 seconds

More frequent heart rate measurement provides more accurate data for elevated heart rate notifications, irregular rhythm alerts, and the new Readiness Score. It also gives workout summaries more accurate average and peak heart rate figures than less frequent measurement.

Readiness Score

A daily score from 0 to 10 that combines recent activity, vitals, sleep quality, and training load to give you a single rating of your capacity to take on a workout or prioritize rest. It is new to this generation. The score appears each morning in the Health app alongside the factors that influenced it.

Recovery HRV tracked up to 24x more often

Heart Rate Variability during recovery is now tracked far more frequently, generating more reliable inputs for the Readiness Score and for users who monitor HRV as an indicator of training stress and recovery status.

Daytime and overnight vitals

Toggle between daytime and overnight metric views. Overnight tracks heart rate, respiratory rate, HRV, and wrist temperature during sleep. Daytime provides context across waking hours. Together, they help identify early shifts in body state.

S11 SiP and watchOS 27

The Apple S11 SiP delivers faster app launches, smoother animations, and more capable on-device AI across the interface. New single-handed gestures include Wrist Flick and Double Tap for effortless control without using the other hand. watchOS 27 introduces a dynamic app grid, Smart Stack widget suggestions, Live Translation via Apple Intelligence, and an updated Workout Buddy providing real-time coaching and training load insights.

For Series 11 owners, the new Health Sensing System, Readiness Score, S11 performance, and ceramic case option are the meaningful additions. If continuous high-frequency health monitoring and daily Readiness scores are part of how you manage fitness and recovery, the upgrade delivers those features at the same starting price as Series 11.

Apple Watch Series 12 vs Apple Watch Ultra 4: which should you buy?

The Series 12 is the right choice for everyday wear, gym use, swimming, and users who want the widest range of sizes and case materials at a more accessible price. The Ultra 4 is built for outdoor athletes, divers, endurance competitors, and anyone who needs maximum battery life, the Emergency Siren, dual-frequency GPS, and scuba dive certification.

If you spend most of your time in the city, office, or gym, the Series 12 covers your needs well at half the price. If you regularly train for triathlons, dive, hike in remote locations, or need more than 24 hours of battery between charges, the Ultra 4 is purpose-built for that use case.
